usb-c charging for 3ds/3dsxl/new3ds/new3dsxl

front side back side

what?

a pcb that lets you convert a 3ds to usb type c charging

ok cool i want one

now comes the unfortunate part... this pcb uses castellated holes which adds a large base price when ordering it. (e.g. 5 of these cost ~37€, 30 cost ~40€ at jlc as of this writing)

if you know me irl i have some of the v1 boards left over, they have some flaws but they work

v1? the pcb says v2?? i'm confused, what changed

in the first version of this board there were still a few issues. the changes from v1 to v2 are as follows:

  • fix hole spacing. in v1 the holes were barely aligned enough to work without adding wires everywhere, in v2 those should be much better
  • shorten the pcb. this avoids having the pcb intersect with the lower case of the 3ds, so v1 users have to cut a larger hole into their case
  • use 0603 resistors instead of 0402
  • add some silkscreen
  • one of the castellated holes is no longer electrically isolated

the first version is not available anywhere due to it being obsoleted by v2.

ok what's next?

  • design and order v1
  • test v1 on actual hardware
  • learn from it and find improvements
  • write blog post and link here
  • design v2
  • test v2 on actual hardware
